Restored by renowned specialist Steve Pickles using repairs where possible and new old-stock parts only when necessary, preserving the car’s character and patina.
Showing 18,368 miles on the odometer, unwarranted but suggested to be genuine based on the report by Steve Pickles.
The Land Rover Series 2, introduced in 1958, represents the evolution of the original Series 1, combining the rugged simplicity and versatility that made the marque famous with improved refinement and capability. Built on a robust ladder-frame chassis with permanent four-wheel drive, the Series 2 featured a wider track than its predecessor, providing greater stability both on- and off-road. The suspension comprised live axles front and rear with coil springs, offering durability and excellent articulation over rough terrain, while 24-volt electrics powered the lighting and essential systems.
Engine options included the dependable 2.25‑litre petrol or the 2,052 cc diesel unit, coupled with a four-speed manual gearbox and two-speed transfer case, allowing the driver to select low-range gearing for challenging conditions. The straightforward mechanical design meant that components could be serviced or replaced with minimal tools, a feature that made the Series 2 a favourite for both agricultural work and long-distance expeditions. Braking was via drum brakes on all four corners, adequate for the vehicle’s intended use, and steering was by recirculating ball, providing robustness over precision.
Produced until 1961, the Series 2 retained the practical, utilitarian ethos of Land Rover, with a flat-sided aluminium body, removable canvas or hard top options, and a simple, functional interior designed for work and endurance. Today, it is celebrated as a classic icon of British engineering — a combination of mechanical simplicity, off-road capability, and unmistakable character that continues to appeal to collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.
On offer today at Klasiko is an early Series 2, featuring the aforementioned 2-litre diesel engine. This particular car was specified from new with many period optional extras, including door locks, overdrive, hand throttle, heater, twin rear bench seats, twin windscreen wiper motors and deluxe bonnet.
As the story goes, this example was initially owned by a farmer in Lincolnshire. The Land Rover was used to drive around his small holding and amassed very little mileage over the course of its life. It was sympathetically restored in the mid-2010s for a previous owner, Nick Lewis (Derby), by renowned specialist Steve Pickles of Fylde R Services. Lewis insisted that nothing should be replaced unless absolutely necessary, and that any replacements be sourced as new old stock where possible. The resulting restoration retains character and a good degree of patina.
Included within the history file is a report from Steve Pickles dated 01 July 2016, which notes that the Land Rover is “extremely original and consists of its own major components. Nothing appeared to have been replaced with newer units or parts from another vehicle.” At the time, the engine was very dry externally, started easily, and the car drove as if it were new — consistent with a vehicle that had covered very low mileage. The mileage, although unwarranted, is believed to be accurate.
Purchased by the current registered owner on 05 July 2018, this Land Rover has been kept as part of a small collection, used sparingly, and is now offered for its next custodian to enjoy. Now showing 18,368 miles on the odometer, included with the vehicle is a small history file containing the aforementioned report, a previous advertisement for the car, sundry invoices, and the current V5C document which displays seven former keepers.
Overall, an opportunity to step into characterful Land Rover ownership — in a car with a compelling story, carefully maintained, and retaining as much originality as possible.
