The Triumph TR5 represents the pinnacle of the TR range during the late 1960s, offering a rare combination of classic British sports car styling, spirited performance, and technical sophistication. Introduced in 1967 as the successor to the TR4A, the TR5 was powered by Triumph’s 2.5-litre straight-six engine, equipped with mechanical fuel injection, producing 150 bhp — a significant step up from its carburettor-equipped predecessors. This engine, paired with a robust four-speed manual gearbox, offered lively acceleration, a flexible power band, and a top-end cruising capability that made the TR5 a genuine driver’s car, renowned for its engaging handling and the characteristic six-cylinder exhaust note.

The chassis featured independent front suspension with coil springs and wishbones and a live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, providing a balanced mix of agility and stability. Four-wheel disc brakes ensured confident stopping power, while rack-and-pinion steering delivered precise and responsive handling, making the TR5 enjoyable on both country roads and more spirited driving conditions.

One of the most desirable features of the TR5 was the optional ‘Surrey Top’, a removable hard panel with a folding rear section that combined the benefits of a coupé-style roof with the open-air experience of a convertible. This versatile design improved structural rigidity over a traditional soft top, while allowing the car to be enjoyed in a wide range of weather conditions.

Production of the TR5 was limited, with only 2,947 examples built, and an even smaller number fitted with the Surrey Top option, making it a rare and highly sought-after variant.

TYK 1F, affectionately known as ‘Tykif’ for obvious reasons, was manufactured on 6 December 1967 — an early car finished in Jasmine with Black trim and hood. A desirable ‘home market’ example, the car was dispatched to Greenwich Automobile Ltd, where it was sold to its first owner and first registered in February 1968.

Correspondence with the TR Register notes the car was owned by D.J. Pocock of Essex in 1979, still retaining its charming registration at the time. Subsequently, in May 1983, it came into the ownership of B. Jackson of Clophill, Beds. Klasiko’s own customer and TR specialist John Sykes owned the car around 2000 before selling it to Edward Turner in June 2001. Turner retained the car for 13 years, with the following keeper owning it for just under a year, until it was purchased by the current owner in May 2015. The car now displays 31,897 miles on the odometer, having covered just 8,356 miles during the last 24 years.

Included with the car is a history file containing the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, a collection of previous tax discs, and the current V5C document showing just 5 former keepers. Previous invoices, MOT certificates dating back to 2001 at 23,541 miles, photographs, and correspondence with the TR Register are also included.

Overall, this is an excellent opportunity to acquire an early production, home-market ‘Surrey Top’ TR5, with just 5 former keepers and two long-term owners in recent decades — a charming and usable classic, ready to be enjoyed.
